Transport to and on Antigua and Barbuda (0 viewing)
Antigua's tourist office boasts that the island has 365 beaches, 'one for each day of the year'. It has great reefs and wrecks for diving and snorkelling. On neighbouring Barbuda you can track the island's fabled frigate birds and visit the Caribbean's largest rookery.

By Air:

V. C. Bird International Airport ( ANU ) (+ 268 462 0642), The airport, located 8km (5 miles) northeast of St. Johns, is approximately a 10 minute drive from town. Its single terminal offers direct flights and connections from surrounding Islands as well as from North American and European major cities. Here are some of the Airlines that fly through ANU:

By Car:

Regular bus service from the airport is a sometime thing so car hire is the preferred way to get around the Island. It is somewhat expensive and make sure you bring your drivers license as you will have to acquire a local driving license for a small fee. Be prepared for a bumpy ride because not many roads are smooth. Maps also come in handy because there are very few signposts. Here are the popular car rentals on the Island:

Taxis are available throughout Antigua and many of the popular destinations have fixed prices. Sample fares from V.C. Bird International Airport to: Nelsons Dockyard--US$21; Shirley Heights - US$21; St. John's - US$7. One neat thing is that the taxi drivers are also licensed tour guides!

Getting Around:

Once out of the airport there is a limited bus service that travels throughout the Island but it is not recommended due to the infrequency of the buses as well as the crowded conditions. There is a very large local demand for these buses including as long waiting periods. Bus schedules can be obtained through your hotel.

Usually most traveling is done by car or taxi service. Car rentals are typically $40-$50 per day and along with your international driving license, a local driving license is also required for about $20.
