In August 1997 a superheated pyroclastic flow from the Soufrière Hills Volcano entered the abandoned town of Plymouth, setting it on fire. One of the Caribbean's most appealing West Indian capitals, lined as it was with period wood-and-stone houses, was lost as the blaze destroyed an estimated 80% of the buildings.
