The western shores of St Lucia are a mighty fine place to be from December to March when the rain eases off a bit. Predictably, these are also the busiest months on the island when both the numbers of tourists and the costs of food, airline tickets and accommodation are much higher. After mid-April many of the prices drop as much as 50%. Carnival in July has not yet been overrun by visitors and can be a good way to be thrown head long into St Lucia culture.

St Lucia is a top Caribbean island choice for honeymooners and jazz lovers, with a beautiful, romantic environment and a famous ten day jazz festival. The southern town of Soufrière is the stepping off point to see and visit several volcanos, enjoy the hot sulphur baths at the Soufrière Botanical Gardens, or go scuba diving or snorkeling at the Anse Chastenet Reef, an area protected by the Soufriere Marine Management Area.

In the capital city of Castries, shop at duty-free stores and the open-air market for goods, fresh fruit and vegetables, and crafts. Visit Derek Walcott Square to see a saman tree aged at 500 years old, or view the murals inside the Roman Catholic cathedral. North of Castries, Rodney Bay attracts sailors and the Pigeon Island National Landmark, on the north side of the bay, attracts those curious about the Arawak and Carib peoples. History buffs will also be interested in the Balenbouche Estate, a working sugar plantation in the southern town of Choiseul.
