St Martin's high season is mid-December to mid-April. The rainy season brings with it heat and humidity instead of trade winds, so summer can be stifling, not to mention peppered with a hurricane or two from June to November. However, prices drop dramatically, by half at some resorts. Shoulder season is a great compromise, either in November or early December or late April and May.

The farm's mesh-encased outdoor museum is as practical as it is magical. Learn about chrysalis stages, watch how cocoons form, or just giggle as butterflies, drunk on nectar, flit around giant plants and a forested canopy. You can visit as often as you like on one ticket.
